Mayonnaise is an extremely popular condiment, and can be found in
nearly every household's fridge. It's uses surpass the mere
limitations of a condiment, or just another topping on a hot dog,
into the realm of being considered a versatile, delicate sauce.
Making mayo at home is tough as it's a long process, may not come
out as intended, and it seems much easier to just purchase the
plain old Hellmann's mayonnaise that will sweep no one off their
feet.
Customizing and having your mayo prepared for you is a show
stopping solution. No work required in preparation, and it comes
out perfectly every time. Mayonnaise will no longer be a simple
addition to a sandwich - now you are free to explore your
creativity with flavouring, colour, and ingredients. You may add
herbs, garlic, different vegetables, as well as lemon or lime. You
may substitute ingredients altering it to match your unique diet.
The combinations are endless.
Once complete, you can share your customization, browse recipes,
and interact with other mayonnaise enthusiasts in the forums.
“Mayonnaise … is ketchup’s dark twin - loved by some, reviled by
others, setting brother against brother wherever it is spread.”
-Gabriel Roth
Mayonnaise dates all the way back to either 1756 or 1806, with
original origins creating a centuries-long fiery debate. Some
believe it was originally a French cuisine, while others will
argue that it originated in Spain. The sauce came to life in Port
Mahon, on a Mediterranean island of what is now Spain, during the
Seven Years' War. The ingredients were what was readily available
at the time: egg and oil. Today, we know that there is so much
that can be done with, and to, this noblest of sauces.
“The fact that mayo doesn’t show up in any of the initial 17th
century [French] recipe collections … does seem to confirm that
the French didn’t have the ‘technology’ for mayonnaise until the
18th century,”
-Tom Nealon
During the 19th century, Mayonnaise landed upon the shores of
America, appearing in gourmet restaurants in forms such as
'Mayonnaise of Lobster', and 'Chicken Mayonnaise'. It didn't take
much time until mayonnaise recipes were dominating the western
world - families now finding themselves dissatisfied with their
previous meals, now requiring all parts to be drenched in the
sauce.
The popular brand, Hellmann's, arised from the ashes in New York
City and took mayonnaise to the next level. No longer was
mayonnaise considered a luxury. For the first time, it graced the
working family's table and has since become a staple and necessity
in everyone's home.
